Late leatherbacks by Lisa Spencer

With some trepidation (technically, being midnight, it was now Friday 13th) we crossed the canal for our first night walk. We were PM2 team which meant we were to take over from the first team, PM1, who after four hours of walking were heading towards bed. Feeling just a little jealous, we were briefed. PM1 had seen a bird, a big wave but unfortunately no turtle tracks.

Jealously soon evaporated as we realized how amazing the beach looked at night. A fall moon and patch clouds meant we could see for miles ahead and even our own shadows on the sand. The beach was the widest we’d seen for a while which meant the going was good. The nine miles covered passed quickly enough, although as tiredness really set in, we started to imagine we could see turtles emerging from the waves. Unfortunately, they turned out to be the famous ‘log’ turtle. The real ones were still proving elusive!
